PSHE (SRE)

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education.

We have tailored our PSHE programme to reflect the needs of our pupils to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

Our PHSE curriculum complements our Science curriculum and covers drug education, financial education, relationship education and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.

Salterforth PSHE Curriculum intent:

At Salterforth, we believe that the teaching of PSHE & SRE gives children the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to have a successful future. We believe that all children are entitled to high quality learning and teaching, which equips them with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need today and to prepare them well for the next step in their educational journey. The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to be accessible to all and to allow the children to know more, remember more and understand more. As a result of this they will become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially, and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Our curriculum is implemented through the One Decision scheme of work and taught discretely every week across all key stages.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Aims of the national curriculum:

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

• develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

• are physically active for sustained periods of time

• engage in competitive sports and activities

• lead healthy, active lives

Salterforth Physical Education curriculum intent:

At Salterforth Primary School, we aim to provide pupils with the best sports provision we can. We aim to promote and foster a keen interest in sports that will lead to life-long sporting participation and an understanding of the need to keep body and mind healthy. We aim to  deliver high quality P.E lessons as well as providing quality extra-curricular activities during and outside of the school day. These include after school sports clubs, forest school, additional swimming and where possible, participation in local competitions.

Our curriculum is implemented through the Lancashire PE passport and is taught discretely each week. All NC classes have the opportunity to swim and have access to Forest School provision as part of their Physical education curriculum each year.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

All state schools are also required to make provision for a daily act of collective worship and must teach religious education to pupils at every key stage. At the heart of our RE syllabus is the quest to understand what it is to be human. By learning about and from religion we can become more open minded, respectful and achieve greater self-awareness. The skills and attitudes developed though RE can thus make a significant contribution to promoting British Values and community cohesion as well as developing cultural capital.

Salterforth Religious Education curriculum intent

At Salterforth Primary School, we aim to provide children with the opportunity to learn about and from the world’s major religions. We aim to provide children with the opportunity to develop their own lines of enquiry regarding religion. We aim to deliver engaging, high quality RE lessons which stimulate children’s natural curiosity. We aim for our children to learn how the world’s major religions are interconnected and to develop a sense of respect for all belief systems regardless of their own.

Our RE curriculum is implemented through the Lancashire RE syllabus and is taught discretely each week in KS1 and KS2.
